This is the first emergence of all three of these entities of man.  NIV- “The Lord God formed the man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.”  

We can see here that God formed the (1) BODY of man from the ground and breathed into Man the breath of life, that is (2) the SPIRIT; and finally Man became a living being (3) the SOUL of Man.

This verse also alludes to these and suggests that there is something else involved, i.e., the heart.  Although it is not an entity of Man, it is where our thoughts and attitudes reside.  

NIV:   “For the Word of God is living and active.  Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to the dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.”

We can, then, ascertain from these verses that Man is made up of three entities---a body, a soul (mind), and a spirit.  And, in come way, involved in this mixture there is a heart where thoughts and attitudes reside.

Paul makes specific reference here to these three entities---the spirit, the soul, and the body.  NIV--”May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through.  May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
