Obesity & Weight

The Problem and Cause of Obesity

Obesity is a multi- faceted problem---IT IS NOT JUST AN EATING PROBLEM.  The reason the obesity/weight loss is so difficult is because there are so many causes for this problem.  I have worked for over 20 years to try to solve the difficulties that confront people when they try to lose weight.  As a result, I have conducted extensive research on this subject and, through that research, I have come to understand that there are many causes and many different kinds of weight and each cause creates a different kind of weight.  For instance, some people have what is sometimes referred to as an “apple shape”.  This is where the weight is centered on the midsection in the abdomen.  There are those who have what is referred to as the “pear shape”.  This is where all of the weight is on the hips, thighs and buttocks.  In others, there is an extreme amount of fat on the upper arms and upper body but almost no fat on the lower arms or forearms.  And then again, there are some people who have weight between their shoulder blades which is sometimes referred to as a “buffalo hump”.

A Main Reason for Unsuccessful Weight Programs Back

Most people who are trying to lose weight never even think about how their weight is different from others who are overweight.  Nor, do they even consider that perhaps the different cause of weight requires a different type of approach to eliminate it.  In fact, most weight loss programs has a “one size fits all” approach and been accepted my many who are overweight.  The reason they have accepted it is because the weight loss industry and our medical profession has given the impression and sometimes even just out right said that weight or obesity is caused from over eating; but that statement is just not true.  Of course, if a person eats 10,000 calories of cake a day that person is most certainly going to gain weight!  In my research, I have found that only about 10 percent of obesity is strictly due to over eating.  I have found that the other 90 percent is due to a problem with the thyroid, pituitary, pancreas, adrenal gland, or sexual glands--both male and female.  A person doesn’t need to be a rocket scientist to realize that if you have weight that is caused by the thyroid, you would need to use a different approach to lose the weight than if your weight was caused by a pancreas problem.  That is just common sense!

Why People Stop a Weight Loss Program  Back

I have found, in my research, that most people have more than one of these problems causing their weight.  That is why, when you go on a weight loss program, you lose weight for a while and then you get what the weight loss industry calls a “plateau” where you stop losing weight.  They explain this plateau as a period when your weight loss comes to a halt so that your body can adjust; again, this is just not true!  Your body comes to this “plateau” because you have solved that particular problem, at least temporarily, that is causing your obesity.  The so-called plateau is really just that the particular program will not fit the next area that is causing your obesity.  Therefore, many people give up on that particular weight loss program and, as a result, a serious problem arises many times.

Place Blame for Failure Where Blame Is Due Back

That problem is that the person on the weight loss program does not blame the program for the failure but blames him/herself; this is also not true!  I have found that the blame should be shared also---and to a greater extent---by the author(s) of the weight loss program because, as the professional(s), it is their job to understand what is causing your specific weight and then help you--as the professional(s)--to try to work through that.  The professional should let you know in the very beginning that it is a multifaceted problem and is not just because you overeat.  You should be made aware that there will be times when the program must be adjusted for you as an individual person and the number of times may be different from those of someone else.

Causes of the “Yo-Yo Diet Syndrome” Back

Some weight loss programs are designed to speed up the thyroid in order to improve the metabolism; however, the thyroid is not the problem and because of that misjudgment other physical problems arise.  There are also some weight loss programs which utilize a restrictive diet as the means of eliminating your weight; but, many times, these diets affect the blood sugar in such an adverse way that they cause major physiological problems.   The list goes on and on and because of these and others the “yo-yo diet syndrome” is created.

The Correct Way to Address Obesity Back

We believe that any program to address obesity must include the following:

  1. It must address a lifestyle that includes eating to balance your pH system.  When we consume foods, they become either acid-forming or alkaline-forming in nature.  The proper percentage of what you eat should be 70 percent alkaline and 30 percent acid-forming foods.

  2. The foods in a person's eating lifestyle must be foods appropriate for rebuilding and restoring the body health and energy.

    1. One-fourth (1/4) of the amount of calories in your food should be fats in your diet because without fats your body cannot utilize certain vitamins.

    2. One-fourth (1/4) of the amount of calories in your food should be protein because protein is used in the body to rebuild muscle.

    3. One half (1/2) of the amount of calories in your food should be complex carbohydrates because carbohydrates are used in your body to produce energy.  A very few of these calories should be simple carbohydrates (processed carbohydrates).

  3. A moderate amount of exercise must be included in your program.  It does not have to be an overwhelming regimen of exercise since a very moderate amount will be sufficient.

  4. An evaluation that is designed to determine the physiological causes of your obesity must be done. However, you must not stop with just the physiological causes---that evaluation must also help to determine the emotional causes of your obesity.  This evaluation must be based on the specific symptoms that you are experiencing.

  5. Based upon the results of that evaluation, a program must be designed specifically for you to restore balance to those areas that are causing your problem thereby restoring your health--emotionally and physically.
