Biblical Creation of Man

The Bible is filled with evidences of God’s Natural Healing Way and how He made Man and developed a way for Man to maintain health.  Genesis tells us of His Creation and is filled with these evidences that Man was created with three entities.

Genesis 2:7 is the first emergence of all three of these entities of man.  NIV “The LORD God formed the man  from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being”.   We can see here that God formed the (1) body of Man from the ground; and breathed into Man the breath of life, (2) the spirit; and finally Man became a living being, (3) the soul of Man.  We can feel confident with this interpretation when we investigate other Scriptures.  For example:

  1. Paul in I Thessalonians 5:23, makes specific reference to these three entities---the spirit, the soul, and the body. NIV "May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ."

  2. Hebrews 4:12 also alludes to these and suggests that there is something else involved, i.e., the heart. Although it is not an entity of Man, it is where our thoughts and attitudes reside. NIV "For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart."

We can, then, ascertain from these verses that Man is made up of  three entities---a body, a soul (mind), and a spirit.  And, in some way, involved in this mixture there is a heart where thoughts and attitudes reside.

When looking at definitions of words as they are interpreted from the Bible, we must understand that the original manuscripts were written in Greek.  Therefore, we have gone back and found the meanings of these words in that language as defined in the Vines Expository Dictionary of New Testament Words: Unabridged Edition by W.E. Vine, M.A.  Mac Donald Publishing Company, McLean, Virginia 22101.
